Dr. Ramirez is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Zimmerman School of Advertising & Mass Communications (ZSAMC) as of 2014. Prior to joining the ZSAMC, Dr. Ramirez was an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication in USF Tampa (2012-2014) and USF Polytechnic in Lakeland (2011-2012). He has also held faculty positions at Arizona State University, Ohio State University, and University of Minnesota, Duluth. Dr. Ramirez earned his doctorate in Communication at the University of Arizona (Ph.D., 2000). Prior to earning his doctorate, Dr. Ramirez worked as an Academic Skills Specialist at the University of Illinois at Chicago assisting underprepared students develop college survival skills (e.g., studying, time management, organization, etc.).
His research focuses on the relational aspects of new media and technology in both task and social environments. His most recent research has focused on (a) how shifting communication modalities (online-offline) affect user impressions and task outcomes; (b) how information seeking behavior online influences perceptions of and communication with individuals and groups; and (c) documenting the nature and use of dormant ties in social networks. The latter research is funded through a 3-year federal grant from the Army Research Office.
Publications from his research endeavors have appeared in numerous discipline outlets including the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, New Media & Society, Communication Monographs, and Journal of Communication. Dr. Ramirez also serves on several journal editorial boards and is a frequently requested reviewer for others.
