Professor Butchart specializes in philosophy of communication (existential semiotics, visual semiotics, ethics), contemporary cultural theory, and medium theory. His research has been published in Semiotica, Communication Theory, Communication, Culture & Critique and elsewhere. He is co-editor of Philosophy of Communication (in press, MIT Press). Prior to joining the faculty at USF, he was Assistant Professor in the Cultural Studies Program at Trent University, Canada..
